Google updates Workspace storage policy timeline

Back in November 2020, Google announced that beginning June 1 2021, any new Docs, Sheets, Slides, Drawings, Forms or Jamboard file will begin counting toward users' free 15GB of allotted storage or any additional storage.

However, the company has extended the deadline for Workspace customers to February 1, 2022. Also, existing files within these products will not count toward storage unless they're modified on or after February 2022.

It is worth mentioning that there is no change in high-quality photo/video uploads in Google Photos which means any new photo or video uploaded in High quality in Google Photos will count toward users free 15 GB storage quota beginning June 1, 2021.

"We recently announced changes to the pooled storage policy for Workspace for Education customers. As a part of these updates, to empower Google Workspace admins to adapt to this model and optimize their storage, we will provide new admin tools to identify and manage how storage is used and allocated before the policy goes into effect. We've decided to delay the count of Google Docs, Sheets, Slides, Drawings, Forms, or Jamboard files count toward storage quotas until that tooling is in place," Google wrote in a blog post.

"These changes to our storage policy are necessary to provide our users with a great experience and to keep pace with the growing demand," the post further added.

Notably, there are no changes to the previously announced dates for personal Google accounts. The updated Google Workspace storage policies timeline will apply to all customers with Workspace and G Suite licenses.
