Samsung Electronics has developed the industry's first 128GB DRAM to support Compute Express Link (CXL) 2.0, the South Korean tech giant said on Friday, adding that the mass production of CXL 2.0 DRAM will start later this year.
The new CXL DRAM supports PCle 5.0 interface (x8 lanes) and provides bandwidth of up to 35GB per second. It is expected to accelerate the commercialization of next-generation memory solutions.
Samsung said that it worked closely with Intel on this landmark advancement on the latter's Xeon platform.
"As a member of the CXL Consortium Board of Directors, Samsung Electronics remains at the forefront of CXL technology. This breakthrough development underlines our commitment to expanding the CXL ecosystem even further through partnerships with data center, server and chipset companies across the industry," said Jangseok Choi, vice president of New Business Planning Team at Samsung Electronics.
CXL 2.0 introduces a groundbreaking feature called memory pooling that binds multiple CXL memory blocks on a server platform to create a pool. This innovative memory management technique also allows hosts to allocate memory dynamically from the pool, resulting in increased efficiency and reduced operating costs for customers. By leveraging this new technology, customers can reinvest resources into reinforcing their server memory.
Commenting on this development, Jim Pappas, director of Technology Initiatives at Intel Corporation, said, "Intel is delighted to work with Samsung on their investment towards a vibrant CXL ecosystem. Intel will continue to work with Samsung to foster the growth and adoption of innovative CXL products throughout the industry."
