India's ambitious goals and unyielding mindset were critical in surpassing major spacefaring nations like Russia, Japan, and the US to achieve its Chandrayaan-3 lunar mission, according to former NASA astronaut and technology executive Steve Lee Smith. He made these remarks on Thursday.

Smith, speaking at the 'Lessons Learned from A Skywalker' session during India's first International Generative Artificial Intelligence Conclave, organized by the Kerala State Industrial Development Corporation (KSIDC) in partnership with IBM, illustrated India's historic achievement as the first country to land a spacecraft in the lunar South Pole.

A veteran astronaut who logged 16 million miles and performed seven spacewalks, Smith underscored the mission-driven nature of astronaut jobs, drawing from his experience and friendship with Indian-born US astronaut Kalpana Chawla. He also recounted the challenges he faced, including being rejected four times by NASA before his eventual success.

Smith emphasized the exciting potential of AI to simplify life and prioritize tasks, urging that government systems build efficient AI models and skillfully train individuals. The event attracted diverse participants, providing a platform for exchanging ideas to shape the future of AI in India.
