Crisis Intensifies as Conflict Destroys Refugee Shelters in Eastern DRC

The UN Refugee Agency reported a worsening crisis in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, where fighting has led to the destruction of shelters for displaced people. 350,000 individuals are left without homes due to the damage or risks of unexploded ordnance, as conveyed by spokesperson Eujin Byun.

The UN Refugee Agency expressed grave concern over the escalating crisis in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo on Friday. The ongoing conflict has demolished numerous shelters designated for displaced persons.

In a briefing, UNHCR spokesperson Eujin Byun revealed that approximately 350,000 internally displaced individuals are now without shelter. The destruction of the camps or the threat posed by unexploded ordnance have rendered it unsafe for these individuals to return home.

Byun, speaking to journalists via video from Geneva, emphasized the urgent need for international assistance to address this dire humanitarian emergency.
