Britain's Antitrust Regulator Charts New Course for Digital Markets

The UK's Competition and Markets Authority (CMA), led by CEO Sarah Cardell, is poised to enhance its engagements in digital markets, focusing on a "clear and direct" impact on local consumers and businesses. Cardell highlighted this shift during her address at the techUK Policy Conference.

With former Amazon UK head Doug Gurr assuming the role of interim chair, the CMA is emphasizing a pro-business direction. Although the CMA's core mission remains promoting competition, Cardell affirmed the necessity for a strategic transformation to bolster business and investor confidence.

Newly granted powers equip the CMA to scrutinize tech firms with significant market reach, such as Google-owner Alphabet and Apple. Cardell introduced the regulator's "four Ps" framework: pace, predictability, proportionality, and process, ensuring a streamlined approach to handling mergers and market investigations.
