Tata Steel has embarked on a significant step towards its green transition, contracting Welsh engineering firm Systems Group for the refurbishment of two continuous casters in Port Talbot. Announced on Tuesday, this project is a key component in Tata's GBP 1.25 billion plan for greener steelmaking.

The Maesteg-based Systems Group is tasked with executing critical structural and pipework upgrades on the casters, vital in transforming liquid steel into solid slabs. The refurbishment aligns with Tata Steel UK's strategy to install a new electric arc furnace by 2027, anticipated to cut Port Talbot’s carbon emissions by 90 percent.

Ryan O’Neill, Managing Director of Systems Group, expressed pride in contributing to South Wales' economic surge and promoting low-carbon steel production. Ian Ellis, Tata Steel's Engineering Project Manager, emphasized the project's significance in readying existing casters for future demands, with further contracts expected soon.
