In a significant move aimed at fostering competition, Google has proposed a policy change that would allow real money games (RMGs) to be featured on Google Play in India. This development comes as a response to anti-competition concerns raised by the Competition Commission of India (CCI) following a complaint from Winzo Games Pvt Ltd.
Additionally, Google announced revisions to its Ads Policy, permitting the advertising of skill-based games in the Indian market under certain conditions. The tech giant aims to ensure fair competition by standardizing policies and providing inclusive access to its platforms for compliant RMGs, addressing CCI's concerns over market exclusion.
The commitment proposal was put forth after the CCI highlighted issues such as selective onboarding of certain fantasy and rummy apps, which allegedly distort competition. Google's proposal suggests opening access to all developer-declared permissible RMGs while finalizing a business model that aligns with the RMG industry's unique commercial dynamics.
Critically, the proposal includes payment warnings applied uniformly to ensure user safety, in compliance with directives from Indian financial authorities. Public commentary on the proposal is being sought until August 20, as Google works towards resolving concerns and developing a transparent commercial model for RMGs.
