TikTok Launches New Age-Detection Technology Across Europe
TikTok is set to introduce a new age-detection technology in Europe to comply with regulatory demands to prevent users under 13 from using the platform. This technology, developed with Ireland's Data Protection Commission, will analyze profiles and content to flag potentially underage accounts for review by moderators.
TikTok will introduce innovative age-detection technology across Europe in forthcoming weeks, according to a statement made to Reuters. The ByteDance-owned platform faces pressure to enhance its methods of identifying and removing accounts belonging to children under 13.
In response to regulatory scrutiny concerning age verification on social media, TikTok's new system will analyze profile information, videos, and behavior to predict if an account may belong to an underage user, subject to review by specialist moderators.
Despite significant initiatives, a universally accepted method to verify ages while safeguarding privacy has yet to be established. TikTok has collaborated with Ireland's Data Protection Commission to ensure its new approach adheres to European regulations.
