US-Indian space venture Pixxel has joined forces with Bengaluru's AI company Sarvam to launch an ambitious orbital data centre satellite, Pathfinder. Pixxel will oversee the satellite's design, construction, and operation, while Sarvam specializes in on-board training and inference with advanced language models, ensuring efficient space-based data processing.
Awais Ahmed, CEO of Pixxel, highlighted the growing challenges around ground-based data centres like energy constraints and scaling issues. He emphasized the environmental benefits of orbital data centres, which leverage solar energy and are closer to space data, offering a sustainable alternative to traditional models.
Pathfinder will feature robust data centre-class GPUs and Pixxel's hyperspectral imaging technology, capable of real-time data pattern identification and analysis. Sarvam's CEO, Pratyush Kumar, noted the sovereignty aspect of AI infrastructure and the value of extending India's AI capabilities into space.
