A surveyor of a Mumbai-based insurance firm was today arrested here for allegedly demanding the bribe from a flood-hit businessman for settling his insurance claim, police said.

53-year-old Gaddam Uma Maheswara Rao from Andhra Pradesh was arrested on the basis of a complaint by Shihab, whose tire shop in Kodungalloor in Thrissur district was completely damaged in the floods.

Shihab, who had insured his shop for Rs 60 lakh, said he suffered a loss of Rs 38 lakh in the floods. Rao allegedly promised him to help pass Rs 25 lakh insurance amount if 40 percent of it was paid to him and demanded Rs 2 lakh as initial payment.

Rao allegedly threatened that if the Rs 2 lakh was not given to him, he would inform the insurance firm that Shihab was making false claims about the losses, police said.
