The Mumbai Railway Vikas Corporation (MRVC) has announced a significant breakthrough on the Panvel-Karjat suburban railway line. On Friday afternoon, MRVC celebrated the successful excavation of the 2,265-meter-long Wavarle tunnel, marking a major milestone for the ongoing project.
Chief Public Relations Officer Sunil Udasi said, 'The successful breakthrough of the tunnel represents a major milestone in the Panvel-Karjat railway project, paving the way for enhanced connectivity and transportation efficiency in the Mumbai suburban region.' The project is part of the Mumbai Urban Transport Project Phase 3 and includes three tunnels of varying lengths.
The Wavarle tunnel, constructed using the New Austrian Tunnelling Method (NATM), boasts advanced features such as public refuge areas, a tunnel control system, and firefighting mechanisms. Despite facing challenges like fractured rock masses and water seepage, the team achieved an average underground excavation output of 175 meters per month through meticulous planning and execution.
