NHAI Invites Global Bids for Satellite-Based Toll Collection on Highways

NHAI is inviting global expressions of interest for implementing GNSS-based toll collection systems on National Highways. The system aims to end physical toll booths, offering seamless tolling through advanced satellite technology. It will integrate with the current FASTag system, initially using both RFID and GNSS technologies.

State-owned NHAI has issued a global call for expressions of interest (EoIs) to implement GNSS-based electronic toll collection on National Highways, an official statement revealed on Friday. This initiative is expected to eliminate physical toll booths, offering a seamless and barrier-free tolling experience.

Indian Highways Management Company Limited (IHMCL), promoted by NHAI, seeks innovative, qualified companies to develop and implement the GNSS-based system, enhancing toll operations' efficiency and transparency according to the statement.

Initially, a hybrid model incorporating both RFID-based and GNSS-based toll systems within the existing FASTag ecosystem will be deployed. Vehicles equipped with GNSS-based ETC will use dedicated lanes for barrier-free passage at toll plazas.

The EoI seeks companies that can create a robust and scalable toll charger software to support the GNSS-based system, providing advantages like barrier-free tolling and distance-based charges. This technology aims to streamline toll collection, reduce leakage, and curtail toll evasion.
