China's GDP contracted to 4.7% in the second quarter, the government reported on Monday, marking a significant focus for the ruling Communist Party's critical meeting. President Xi Jinping's leadership is under the spotlight with efforts to rejuvenate the world's second-largest economy.
The four-day meeting, called the 'Third Plenum,' involves 376 full and alternate members of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee. Key issues include comprehensive reforms and modernizing China's economy amid demographic challenges, sluggish growth, and escalating local government debts.
Xi Jinping, the party's general secretary, initiated the meeting by delivering a work report. Despite economic challenges, the CPC saw a silver lining in the 5% growth rate for the first half of the year, aligning with official targets. The NBS highlighted the need to consolidate the foundation for economic recovery, noting complex external conditions and insufficient domestic demand.
