British Pound Gains Amid Inflation Rise as Dollar Struggles
The British pound experienced a slight increase after UK inflation exceeded expectations. However, investor focus shifted towards potential Federal Reserve rate cuts. Sterling rose by 0.1% before stabilizing, while broader markets saw mixed reactions with the dollar facing downward pressure. The yen also saw a minor rise amid intervention speculation.
The British pound experienced a modest increase on Wednesday, following data indicating UK inflation rose slightly above expectations. This development put the U.S. dollar on the defensive as traders turned their attention to the possibility of Federal Reserve rate cuts as soon as September.
Annual British headline inflation remained at 2% in June, above forecasts of a 1.9% rise, while services inflation hit 5.7%. Core inflation met expectations. Sterling saw a brief 0.1% increase before stabilizing at $1.2973. Investors monitored these figures closely to gauge potential interest rate cuts by the Bank of England in August.
The broader market saw the dollar struggling against its peers, unable to maintain gains after strong U.S. retail sales data. The euro firmed to $1.0900, and the Australian dollar remained steady at $0.6732. The dollar index stood unchanged at 104.21. Meanwhile, the yen rose 0.2% to 158.04 per dollar amid concerns over possible Japanese intervention following significant market actions last week.
