The U.S. Transportation Department announced on Tuesday its investigation into Delta Air Lines, which has canceled over 5,000 flights since Friday due to a global cyber outage affecting airlines worldwide. While other carriers resumed normal operations, Delta continues to grapple with issues in its crew tracker application, causing daily flight cancellations.

Since Friday, Delta has canceled more than 30% of its flights each day through Monday, with 469 additional cancellations and 1,061 delays reported on Tuesday, as noted by FlightAware. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg emphasized the investigation aims to ensure Delta adheres to laws and addresses passenger needs during these widespread disruptions. "Our department will use all investigative and enforcement powers to protect Delta passengers' rights," Buttigieg stated.

Delta acknowledged receipt of the investigation notice and expressed full cooperation. "Delta teams are working tirelessly to support affected customers and restore the reliable service they expect," the airline said. Although Delta's stock fell by 0.5% in early trading, CEO Ed Bastian mentioned that it would take a few more days for operations to stabilize. The outage, sparked by a software update from cybersecurity firm CrowdStrike, also affected other major airlines.

The disruptions have left passengers frustrated, with many waiting hours for assistance and some driving long distances due to flight cancellations. Delta's pilots have also voiced their dissatisfaction. Delta's pilot union leader Darren Hartmann expressed that pilots felt unsupported in the system.

U.S. Senate Commerce Committee Chair Maria Cantwell has written to Delta's CEO, urging the airline to ensure compliance with recently passed passenger rights laws. The situation mirrors Southwest Airlines' previous issues, which led to a substantial $140 million penalty following a similar crisis during the 2022 holiday season.
