Captain Manish Raj Shakya, the lone survivor of a devastating plane crash in Nepal that claimed 18 lives, was saved after the cockpit was sheared off by a freight container seconds before the rest of the aircraft burst into flames, according to a Thursday media report.

The Bombardier CRJ-200 aircraft of Saurya Airlines, with 19 people on board, caught fire shortly after taking off from Tribhuvan International Airport (TIA) en route to Pokhara International Airport for regular maintenance. Of the deceased, 15 died instantly while three succumbed to their injuries in a local hospital.

Authorities have launched an investigation into the incident, led by former Civil Aviation Authority of Nepal (CAAN) Director General Ratish Chandra Lal Suman, to determine the cause and prevent future occurrences. Meanwhile, Prime Minister K P Sharma Oli has called for comprehensive measures to prevent such tragedies.
