Railway Board Mandates Trolley Bags for Loco Pilots and Guards
The Railway Board has mandated the provision of trolley bags to loco pilots and guards, replacing the heavy iron trunks traditionally used. Despite being initiated in 2006, the move faced resistance and legal challenges. After a favorable decision from the Central Administrative Tribunal, the directive is now being implemented, though further legal appeals are underway.

Loco pilots and guards will no longer have to lug their personal and official equipment in iron trunks, as the Railway Board has issued a directive to provide them with trolley bags instead.
In a letter dated July 19, the Railway Board instructed all zones to begin distributing trolley bags, a move that was first initiated back in 2006 but faced significant delays due to opposition from loco pilots and guards. The Board's recent directive follows successful trials and a favorable ruling from the Central Administrative Tribunal (CAT) on February 8.
Officials highlight several benefits of this change, including monetary savings from terminating 'Box Boy' contracts and reducing train detention times. However, the All India Guards Council has expressed concerns over safety and the additional burden on train managers. Despite the ongoing challenges, the Board is pressing ahead with implementation.
