India's electric vehicle market has shown remarkable advancements, especially in the two- and three-wheeler segments, which reported a 95.94 percent and 18.18 percent year-on-year growth in July, according to the Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations (FADA). The report highlighted that these segments currently hold market shares of 7.4 percent and 57.6 percent, respectively.
These figures signal growing acceptance and demand for electric vehicles, FADA noted. However, the private vehicle sector saw a slight yearly decline of 2.92 percent, maintaining a market share of 2.4 percent.
The growth rates for electric two-wheelers and three-wheelers in July also recorded month-on-month increases of 34.56 percent and 21.72 percent, respectively. The three-wheeler segment's yearly growth rate stood at 18.18 percent.
FADA President Manish Raj Singhania commented on the July EV sales, stating, "The commercial vehicle (CV) segment has shown remarkable growth with a year-on-year increase of 124.2 percent, holding a current market share of 1.02 percent. This illustrates the expanding adoption of electric commercial vehicles." He added, "The combination of attractive discounts and the anticipated end of the Electric Mobility Promotion Scheme (EMPS), despite its extension, has significantly boosted sales. This momentum reinforces our commitment to driving sustainable mobility and furthering India's journey towards a greener future."
Retail automobile sales in India experienced double-digit growth in July, with a year-on-year increase of 13.84 percent, spanning almost all vehicle categories. The two-wheeler segment's notable growth was attributed to a thriving rural economy, positive monsoon effects, and government support programs, which enhanced rural incomes. The introduction of new products and better stock availability also played significant roles, despite market slowdowns in certain regions, excessive rains, and increased competition.
Moreover, the segment saw a rise in EV sales due to discounts and the approaching EMPS deadline. The Electric Mobility Promotion Scheme 2024, with an outlay of INR 778 crore for a period of six months from April to September 2024, provides incentives to buyers of electric two- and three-wheelers. Furthermore, passenger vehicle sales saw a robust 14 percent growth, driven by new model launches and attractive pricing strategies.
