The S&P 500 and Nasdaq closed 1% higher on Tuesday as investors returned to the market following a dramatic sell-off. Recent comments from Federal Reserve officials helped ease concerns over a U.S. recession.
Although the Dow, S&P 500, and Nasdaq all rose, they pared gains towards the close. Federal Reserve policymakers have rebuffed the notion that weaker July jobs data signals a recession while hinting at possible interest rate cuts to sustain the economy.
Weak economic data previously triggered market sell-offs. Nonetheless, traders are anticipating a 75% likelihood the Fed will cut rates by 50 basis points at its September meeting, according to CME Group's FedWatch Tool. All major S&P 500 sectors ended higher, with technology powerhouse Nvidia boosting the market significantly. The Nasdaq remains up 9% for 2024, driven by optimism in artificial intelligence.
