In a significant development, the Ministry of Chemicals and Fertilizers confirmed on Friday the completion of 32 projects under the Production Linked Incentive (PLI) Scheme. The scheme is designed to promote domestic manufacturing of crucial Key Starting Materials (KSMs), Drug Intermediates, and Active Pharmaceutical Ingredients (APIs). These projects, with an annual installed capacity of 56,679 metric tons, are poised to bolster India's pharmaceutical supply chain and minimize import dependency.

With a financial allocation of Rs 6,940 crores, the PLI Scheme aims to enhance local bulk drug production and supply chain resilience. Since its launch, it has garnered substantial interest, with 249 applications received and 48 projects selected. Notably, 13 of these projects are being undertaken by 10 Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs). The completion of 32 projects marks significant progress, while the remaining 16 are still under development.

Government support is facilitating the regulatory approval process, including environmental clearances and drug manufacturing licenses. State governments are playing a key role in expediting these approvals to meet project deadlines. The scheme has exceeded its initial investment target of Rs 3,938 crores, with current investments totaling Rs 4,024 crores. This reflects robust industry confidence in India's pharmaceutical sector.

The geographic distribution of projects is detailed in an annexure, showing the nationwide impact. The Ministry reaffirmed its commitment to the domestic pharmaceutical industry, ensuring India advances towards self-reliance in crucial drug manufacturing. Achieving these milestones supports the broader 'Atmanirbhar Bharat' initiative, emphasizing India's goal to become a global pharmaceutical hub and secure essential drugs for domestic use.
