FTSE 100 Inches Higher Amid Crucial Inflation Numbers
London's FTSE 100 saw minor gains amid broader market increases ahead of significant inflation data from the U.S. and UK. Pharma, biotech, and industrial support services sectors led gains, while the Dowlais Group's plunge affected the mid-caps. UK wage growth slowdown impacted investor sentiments.
London's FTSE 100 index inched higher on Tuesday amid broader market gains leading up to crucial inflation data from the United States and the UK. However, cart parts supplier Dowlais Group lagged behind in the mid-cap category.
The blue-chip FTSE 100 index was up by 0.3%, with the mid-cap FTSE 250 adding 0.1% by 0712 GMT. Both indices appear poised to extend their rally for the third consecutive session, following a two-week streak of declines. Pharma, biotech, and industrial support services sectors led the broader gains with a 0.7% rise each, while the automobile sector saw declines influenced by a 10.2% drop in Dowlais Group shares.
Dowlais Group hit the bottom of the FTSE 250 after announcing the exploration of a potential sale of its GKN Powder Metallurgy unit and revising its annual revenue forecast. This news pushed the sectoral index to its lowest level since early 2009. Separately, industrial metal miners dipped by 0.5% amid easing copper prices as investors engaged in profit-taking activities. UK economic data revealed a slowdown in average earnings growth and an unexpected drop in unemployment, which pushed the pound higher against the dollar.
