Global stocks surged on Friday, signaling a potential fourth consecutive month of gains. Despite a turbulent early August, positive U.S. economic data has bolstered investor confidence, helping the dollar break its weeks-long losing streak.
According to Commerce Department data released on Friday, the U.S. personal consumption expenditures (PCE) price index, the Federal Reserve's preferred measure of inflation, rose by 0.2% in July. Consumer spending, accounting for over two-thirds of U.S. economic activity, increased by 0.5% last month, setting the stage for the Federal Reserve to begin easing monetary policy from September.
Wall Street's main indexes saw significant gains. The Dow Jones Industrial Average, the S&P 500, and the Nasdaq Composite all rose, following the release of the positive economic data. European and Asia-Pacific markets reflected similar trends, contributing to a broader global market rally.
