India's industrial production took a surprise downturn this August 2024, shrinking by 0.1% compared to the previous month. This marks a negative turn for the first time in nearly two years, primarily influenced by setbacks in the mining and power sectors.
The National Statistical Office (NSO) revised July's growth figures to 4.7% from 4.8%, revealing a more modest expansion. Heavy rainfall this month was a significant factor contributing to the reduction in mining outputs. Meanwhile, manufacturing displayed minimal growth, barely avoiding contraction.
Despite the downturn, Icra anticipates a rebound in the coming months. Aditi Nayar, Icra's Chief Economist, predicts industrial output to improve to 3-5% in September 2024, buoyed by a likely stabilization in electricity and mining sectors, a favorable base, and increased pre-festive economic activities.
