In a significant move towards sustainability, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma unveiled a plan to retire diesel city buses in Guwahati by 2026. These will be replaced with over 356 electric buses and an additional 100 under the PM e-Bus Sewa initiative, making Guwahati a 'green corridor.'
Alongside the unveiling of a mini Inter-State Bus Terminal at Khanapara, Sarma emphasized Assam's progress in digital transformation of the transport system, securing its place as the country's leader in this domain. Nearly 90 percent of the middlemen involvement in Assam State Transport Corporation has been eradicated, further enhancing efficiency.
Plans are also underway to establish six vehicle fitness centres and motor driving institutes in every assembly constituency, allowing principals to issue driving licenses, aligning with the government's vision for streamlined transport services.
