Govt Announces $9 Million Boost for Great Rides Infrastructure Upgrades

Cycling New Zealand's renowned Great Rides is set to become even more enjoyable, thanks to a $9 million Government investment aimed at infrastructure upgrades and replacements. Tourism and Hospitality Minister Louise Upston made the announcement, emphasizing the importance of maintaining and improving the trails to enhance the visitor experience.

With visitor numbers projected to rise, ensuring these trails remain in top condition is a key priority. The funding will focus on improving trail design, resilience, and sustainability to accommodate growing rider numbers and withstand extreme weather conditions.

"We recognize that some of the Great Rides trails need essential work. This funding will address those issues, making them more durable and enjoyable for everyone. I'm excited to see how this investment benefits local communities by bringing more visitors to experience the stunning landscapes of New Zealand," Minister Upston stated.

Strengthening Tourism with Strategic Investments

This initiative is part of the Government's broader commitment to strengthening tourism, a sector that contributes nearly $38 billion to the economy and supports close to 200,000 jobs. Minister Upston highlighted additional tourism investments announced this month, including:

• $500,000 to promote New Zealand as a 'go now' destination for Australian travelers.
• $30 million allocated to conservation tourism initiatives.
• $3 million dedicated to regional tourism projects.

Public sentiment strongly supports tourism investment, with 93 per cent of New Zealanders agreeing that tourism benefits the country. Minister Upston emphasized that 2025 presents a major opportunity to showcase New Zealand as a dynamic, welcoming destination for visitors from around the world.

A Milestone Celebration in Queenstown

The announcement was made in Queenstown, where Minister Upston attended the grand opening of the Hugo Tunnel on the Shotover Gorge Trail. This separately funded project will provide an off-road cycling route linking Frankton to Arthurs Point, offering a breathtaking ride along the Shotover River.

Funding Details and Application Process

The two-year funding package is available through the Ngā Haerenga New Zealand Cycle Trail Fund. Applications will open on 31 March, with a contestable funding process requiring applicants to contribute 25-50 per cent of the total project cost.

With this investment, the Government is ensuring that New Zealand's cycling trails remain world-class, offering unforgettable experiences for both domestic and international visitors.
