Business leaders, entrepreneurs, and government officials in KwaZulu-Natal have convened at the Inkosi Albert Luthuli International Convention Centre for the 2025 Umyezane Summit, Conference, and Awards. Hosted by the Department of Economic Development, Tourism and Environmental Affairs (EDTEA), the event serves as a pivotal platform to address critical challenges and opportunities facing small, medium, and micro enterprises (SMMEs) in the province.
Fostering Economic Transformation
KwaZulu-Natal Premier Thamsanqa Ntuli, in his opening address, underscored the indispensable role of SMMEs in driving economic transformation and job creation.
"The growth of SMMEs is central to building a resilient and inclusive economy. Through initiatives like the Umyezane Summit, we aim to empower small businesses, strengthen township and rural economies, and ensure that historically disadvantaged entrepreneurs are given meaningful opportunities to thrive," Ntuli stated.
He emphasized the provincial government's commitment to eliminating barriers such as crime, limited access to funding, and restricted market opportunities that hinder SMME development.
Public-Private Collaboration for Sustainable Growth
EDTEA MEC Musa Zondi highlighted the significance of public-private partnerships in unlocking economic opportunities for SMMEs, calling for enhanced cooperation between the government, corporate sector, and entrepreneurs.
"We must remove red tape, foster innovation, and create sustainable pathways for small businesses to succeed in both local and global markets," Zondi remarked.
Key Discussions and Solutions
The summit featured expert-led panel discussions, policy dialogues, and networking sessions, engaging stakeholders on vital topics including:
- Crime and Business Security – Addressing the impact of crime on small businesses and strategies to enhance security.
- Regulatory and Policy Compliance – Simplifying business registration and licensing processes.
- Revitalising Township and Rural Economies – Exploring innovative approaches to support businesses in historically underserved areas.
- Access to Funding and Market Opportunities – Strengthening financial support mechanisms for SMMEs.
- The Black Industrialists Programme – Accelerating transformation by expanding support for Black-owned enterprises in key sectors.
Recognising Excellence in Entrepreneurship
As part of the event, the Umyezane Awards celebrated outstanding entrepreneurs who have demonstrated resilience, innovation, and business excellence. Award categories honored youth and women-owned businesses, rural enterprises, and emerging industrialists making a substantial impact on the provincial economy.
Premier Ntuli commended the award recipients, affirming the government's commitment to nurturing a robust entrepreneurial ecosystem.
"Our mission is to ensure that small businesses are not only surviving but thriving, contributing significantly to the economic fabric of KwaZulu-Natal," Ntuli concluded.
The summit, which concludes today, reaffirms the province's dedication to empowering SMMEs as key drivers of inclusive economic growth and development.
