On Thursday, Union Home and Cooperation Minister Amit Shah launched the long-awaited National Cooperation Policy, revealing expansive plans to develop a comprehensive cooperative ecosystem. This initiative targets emerging sectors such as tourism, taxi services, insurance, and green energy.
The policy, unveiled after 23 years and formulated by a 48-member committee led by former Union minister Suresh Prabhu, is designed to triple the cooperative sector's contribution to the nation's GDP by 2034. This goal supports India's broader vision of becoming a developed nation by 2047.
Amit Shah also announced the setup of a multi-purpose taxi cooperative by the end of the year, while emphasizing the accelerated progress on the insurance cooperative. The policy outlines strategic interventions across six pillars, aiming to professionalize and technologically enable cooperatives, expanding reach to an additional 50 crore potential members.
