US-India Tariff Tensions Escalate Over Russian Oil Dealings
The United States has imposed an additional 25% tariff on Indian goods in response to India's continued import of Russian crude oil. India deemed this action 'unfair' and 'unreasonable,' emphasizing its energy ties with Russia are for safeguarding national interests. The tariffs target textiles, marine, and leather sectors.

The escalating trade tensions between the United States and India have taken a new turn with the US levying a 25% additional tariff on Indian goods, a move India has condemned as 'unfair, unjustified, and unreasonable'. This comes amid New Delhi's procurement of Russian crude oil, which India asserts is vital for its energy security.
Following an executive order by US President Donald Trump, India warned of retaliatory measures to protect its interests. The Ministry of External Affairs defended the oil imports, stating they are based on market determinants to ensure energy security for its 1.4 billion citizens. The new tariffs threaten to impact crucial Indian sectors like textiles, marine, and leather.
New Delhi's reaction underscores the strategic tensions between the two nations, especially as the US continues its own imports from Russia. Despite several rounds of negotiations for a bilateral trade deal, fundamental differences, particularly in the agriculture and dairy sectors, have hindered progress.
