The Union Cabinet, under Prime Minister Narendra Modi's leadership, has sanctioned a targeted subsidy amounting to Rs 300 per 14.2 kg LPG cylinder. This subsidy, applicable for up to nine refills annually during the fiscal year 2025-26, seeks to ease the financial burden on Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY) beneficiaries. The initiative represents a substantial governmental expenditure of Rs 12,000 crore.
Since its inception in May 2016, PMUY has strived to furnish deposit-free LPG connections to adult women in economically disadvantaged households. As of July 1, 2025, approximately 10.33 crore connections are active under this scheme nationwide. Beneficiaries receive not only the LPG connection but also a complimentary Security Deposit, Pressure Regulator, Suraksha Hose, Domestic Gas Consumer Card, and installation services.
To further enhance affordability, PMUY beneficiaries are spared any initial costs associated with their LPG connections, first refills, or stoves. This initiative is a strategic response to India's dependency on LPG imports, which account for about 60% of its supply. The government has incrementally increased subsidies, beginning with Rs 200 in May 2022, now elevated to Rs 300 in October 2023, promoting sustained LPG usage amidst fluctuating global prices.
