Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis announced a strategic 30-year Comprehensive Mobility Plan (CMP) to significantly boost Pune's average travel speed, currently as low as 12 kmph, aligning it with the 30 kmph standard for metropolitan cities. The plan involves removing bottlenecks at 35 key locations across the city.
Fadnavis emphasized the need for expansive road networks, including ring roads and tunnel systems, particularly for Pune's congested core areas, where roads comprise just six percent of the land. Estimated at Rs 1.2 lakh crore, the CMP's first phase requires Rs 6,500 crore for immediate interventions.
The ambitious plan also aims to increase public transport's share to 50% and ensure all citizens have access within 500 meters. The Pune Municipal Corporation and Police Commissioner outlined the mobility plan's finer details while exploring short-term traffic solutions.
