The Indian government is poised to implement new regulations governing online gaming starting October 1, according to statements made by Union Information and Technology Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw on Thursday. Vaishnaw noted that extensive consultations with online gaming companies and various stakeholders informed the drafting of these regulations.
Speaking at the pre-event ceremony of the AI Impact Summit 2026, organised by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, Vaishnaw emphasized the consultative nature of the government's approach. He revealed plans for another round of discussions with industry leaders before the regulations take effect. 'Our standard approach is very consultative on practically everything that we do,' he added.
The new law, titled The Promotion and Regulation of Online Gaming Bill, 2025, received the President's assent on August 22, following its passage in Parliament. The regulations aim to promote e-sports while banning harmful online money games and related financial transactions and advertisements. Violations will be criminalized, targeting service providers and promoters rather than players.
