BJP MP Kanad Purkayastha has called on the Railways Ministry to create a dedicated rail division in Silchar, citing the need to boost operational efficiency in the northeastern region.
During Zero Hour in the Rajya Sabha, he praised the efforts of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw for enhancing railway infrastructure in the area. Purkayastha highlighted the growing workload on Lumding Division due to increased broad-gauge sections and international traffic demands, particularly with the upcoming Trans-Asian Railway network.
He emphasized the urgency as the region frequently faces logistical disruptions due to Monsoon-related landslides and floods. Despite a 2012 Railway Board notification for a new division at Silchar, progress remains stalled, unlike the Jammu division, which becomes operational in January 2025.
