India's Aviation Challenges: Vacancies and Flight Cancellations

Over 2,600 positions remain unfilled at India's aviation bodies, with major vacancies at AAI and DGCA due to restructuring. Meanwhile, IndiGo's operational issues led to nearly 7,000 flight cancellations, affecting over a million passengers.

India’s aviation sector is grappling with a significant staffing challenge. The Airports Authority of India (AAI) and three aviation regulators, including the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), have more than 2,600 unfilled positions, according to a government statement on Thursday.

Minister of State for Civil Aviation Murlidhar Mohol informed the Lok Sabha that steps are being taken to address these vacancies. The DGCA has 787 unoccupied posts, in part due to new positions created as a result of organizational restructuring from 2022 to 2024. At the AAI, 1,667 executive-level positions are unfilled.

The challenges don't end there. Over the last three months, IndiGo canceled 6,936 flights, affecting over a million passengers. The airline attributed these cancellations to operational optimization issues, regulatory shortcomings, software deficiencies, and adverse weather conditions.
