India's Rail Expertise: A Boost for South Africa's Infrastructure

Indian High Commissioner Prabhat Kumar emphasizes India's role in enhancing South Africa's railway infrastructure, highlighting the interest of Indian firms in this sector. The focus includes supplying equipment and advanced train technologies, as well as ongoing negotiates for a Free Trade Agreement with the Southern African Customs Union.

Indian High Commissioner Prabhat Kumar has underscored the potential for India's railway infrastructure and management experience to significantly benefit South Africa. Speaking to industry leaders at the CII India Business Forum, he emphasized the growing interest among Indian companies to collaborate in the sector.

Kumar revealed that Indian firms such as Texmaco Rail and Engineering are exploring opportunities to supply railway wagons to South Africa, with discussions ongoing with local companies. Additionally, RITES, an Indian railway consultancy, is in talks to provide railway engines.

The envoy highlighted India's semi-high-speed train technology, capable of operating at speeds up to 200 km/h on existing tracks, as a feasible solution for South Africa's rail restoration efforts. Kumar also noted the scope for cooperation in energy and digital payments sectors, while discussions continue for a Free Trade Agreement with the Southern African Customs Union.
