On Monday, jewellers in Lucknow gathered in protest against Prime Minister Narendra Modi's recent appeal to defer gold purchases for a year. Modi's plea aims to save foreign exchange as the West Asia crisis impacts national interests. However, jewellers argue that this measure threatens their livelihoods.
Manish Kumar Verma, UP unit head of the All India Jewellers and Goldsmith Association, stated that the prime minister's recommendations could lead to an economic crisis for bullion traders and related workers. Jewellers have demanded government intervention to support their trade.
Critics of Modi's austerity measure, including opposition leaders, have labeled it as evidence of governmental inefficacy, challenging the BJP's stance that the appeal prioritizes national welfare amid global challenges.
