The Lieutenant Governor Administration of Ladakh has decided to grant 'industry' status to hotels and guest houses registered with the Tourism Department, a move aimed at strengthening the region's hospitality sector and boosting tourism-led economic growth, officials said on Wednesday.
Lieutenant Governor V K Saxena, in a post on X, said hotels and guest houses registered with the Tourism Department in Ladakh be accorded ''industry'' status, making them eligible for incentives, concessions, and infrastructure support at par with other industrial units in the Union Territory.
He said the decision aligns with Prime Minister Narendra Modi's continued focus on strengthening domestic tourism through policy support and incentives. The order will come into effect from June 1, 2026.
Spelling out the benefits of the new policy, the LG said the ''industry'' status will make hospitality units eligible for electricity and water tariffs at industrial rates, which are lower than existing commercial rates.
''The units will also be eligible for concessional bank loans under state and central industrial policies, along with exemption from property tax,'' he said.
He further said the decision will reduce operational costs for hotels and guest houses, while enhancing investor confidence in Ladakh's tourism sector.
Describing the move as a long-pending demand of stakeholders, the Lieutenant Governor expressed confidence that the new incentives would accelerate the growth of the hotel industry in Ladakh and help meet the rising demand from tourists.
He added that the policy will create an enabling environment for expansion and strengthening of the hospitality sector, ensuring a better and more memorable experience for visitors to Ladakh.
