GM Engines Under the Microscope: Escalation in Investigation
The NHTSA has upgraded a probe into General Motors vehicles after engine failures in nearly 1 million cars. This deeper investigation follows a 2025 recall affecting models like the Cadillac Escalade and Chevrolet Silverado. Past attempts to fix the issue have not entirely succeeded, leading to consumer complaints.
On Friday, the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) escalated its investigation into nearly 1 million General Motors vehicles, primarily focusing on engine failures that prompted a recall in 2025.
This new phase, an engineering analysis, is the final step before NHTSA might demand an expanded recall or further repairs. The affected models, including the Cadillac Escalade and Chevrolet Silverado, feature L87 engines from 2021 to 2026.
General Motors had issued a recall in 2025 for almost 600,000 of these vehicles due to engine failure. However, complaints persist, with more than 7,000 new reports received, escalating concerns over the effectiveness of the initial recall.
