An investigation has been launched after a class 10 student at a state-run residential school in Odisha's Malkangiri district gave birth at the hostel, police reported on Tuesday.

The student delivered a baby girl shortly after returning to the hostel post her board examination. The school's headmaster, under the ST & SC Development, Minorities & Backward Class Welfare Department, expressed confusion over how the girl was pregnant, noting that men are not permitted in the girls' hostel.

The girl and her newborn are receiving care at the local hospital and are in stable condition, officials confirmed. A departmental inquiry is underway, with one man detained by police under suspicion of involvement, amid questions about how the pregnancy went undiscovered.
