In a significant policy shift, Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu declared a statewide ban on mobile phones within government and private schools across Himachal Pradesh, starting on March 1, 2026. The announcement was made at the 69th National School Games' closing ceremony in Bilaspur's Ghumarwin district.

The policy aims to minimize distractions and boost educational focus. Any student found with a phone faces a Rs 500 fine, confiscation of the device, and mandatory parental counselling. The Education Department will draft an SOP for handling repeated violations, according to Sukhu.

Sukhu also emphasized the state's initiatives to foster sports and employment for female athletes. A Rs 20 lakh cash prize was announced for the National Handball Championship winners. Infrastructure projects like a new girls' hostel and an indoor stadium were also highlighted.
