The Directorate of Education has mandated all government, aided, and private recognized schools in the area to initiate awareness programs on solid waste management during the first week of May, officials announced this Thursday.
This initiative follows instructions from the Delhi Pollution Control Committee and the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, under the Environment (Protection) Act, 1986. As per the official circular, schools are required to conduct various activities, including lectures on waste management awareness, painting competitions, essay writing contests focusing on 'effective and feasible ways to segregate waste,' and group discussions. These efforts aim to support the implementation of the Solid Waste Management Rules, 2026.
The circular emphasizes important awareness points such as minimizing waste generation, proper waste segregation, safe disposal practices, and recycling and reuse. All district Deputy Directors of Education (DDEs) have been tasked to ensure compliance with these directives and are to submit action taken reports to the DoE's Science Branch by May 8. The directive received prior approval from the competent authority.
