Bob Newhart, the deadpan accountant-turned-comedian recognized among the most popular TV stars of his era, has passed away at 94.

According to his publicist Jerry Digney, Newhart died Thursday in Los Angeles following a series of short illnesses.

Best known for his eponymous TV shows in the 1970s and 1980s, Newhart began his career in stand-up comedy during the late 1950s. He gained nationwide fame with his 1960 comedy album “The Button-Down Mind of Bob Newhart,” which won a Grammy Award for Album of the Year.
