French Authorities Investigate Death Threats and Cyber Harassment

French authorities have initiated an investigation into death threats and cyber harassment aimed at Thomas Jolly, the artistic director of the 2024 Olympics opening ceremony, the Paris Prosecutor's office announced on Friday.

Jolly reported the threats following a controversial scene in the ceremony, portrayed on the Seine River. The scene, which some perceived as parodying Leonardo da Vinci's 'The Last Supper,' included drag queens, a transgender model, and a naked singer depicted as Dionysus, the Greek god of wine.

The portrayal triggered outrage among the Catholic Church, far-right politicians in France, and the religious right in the United States. Paris 2024 organizers and Jolly have both apologized, clarifying that their intention was not to offend any religious group. French DJ and producer Barbara Butch, who participated in the scene, also reported receiving similar threats and has filed complaints.
