On Wednesday, Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan announced a compensation package of Rs six lakh for the next of kin of those who died in the devastating landslides in Wayanad on July 30, which claimed over 200 lives.

Vijayan specified that Rs four lakh would come from the State Disaster Response Fund (SDRF) and Rs two lakh from the Chief Minister's Distress Relief Fund (CMDRF). Additionally, those who lost eyes or limbs, or suffered more than 60 per cent disability, will receive Rs 75,000 from the CMDRF.

Victims who sustained serious injuries or disabilities between 40 to 60 per cent will be given Rs 50,000. These payments will be on top of the support provided by the SDRF. Furthermore, survivors opting for rented accommodation or living with relatives will get Rs 6,000 per month towards rent.
