The Kolkata Police on Friday confirmed the arrest of 19 individuals linked to the vandalism and violence at R G Kar Medical College and Hospital.

City court has remanded the arrested individuals to police custody until August 22, according to local officials.

The chaos saw parts of the hospital's emergency ward, nursing station, and outpatient department damaged by miscreants during midnight protests by women across West Bengal. The protests were sparked by the alleged rape and murder of a doctor in the hospital's seminar hall on August 9.

In addition, several people, including some police officers, were injured in the outbreak of violence.

Meanwhile, junior doctors at government healthcare facilities continued their cease work on Friday, demanding exemplary punishment for those responsible and an enhancement of security measures at workplaces.

Opposition parties have criticized the police for not taking sufficient action to prevent the violence at the state-run R G Kar Medical College and Hospital.

Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee mentioned on Thursday evening that the vandalism had led to the destruction of two floors in the emergency ward, looting of medicines, and severe damage to infrastructure and equipment.
