Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant on Wednesday announced a compensation of Rs 5 lakh each to the families of fish workers who died of dehydration earlier this week at the fishing jetty in Cutbona village. Sawant was joined by state Environment Minister Aleixo Sequeira and local MLA Cruz Silva during his visit to the village in South Goa to assess the situation.

The tragic incident saw six laborers working on a fishing boat perish, with three of them being declared dead upon arrival at a local hospital. 'The death of these workers is deeply saddening,' said Sawant, emphasizing the need for immediate action.

In addition to the state government's compensation, Sawant urged boat owners to contribute Rs 5 lakh to the families of each deceased worker, stressing that the safety and hygiene of laborers is the boat owners' responsibility. The state fisheries and health departments have been tasked with creating Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) to ensure better safety and hygiene on fishing boats, while district authorities will monitor compliance.
