Rev. Thomas D'Souza, currently the parish priest at Holy Spirit Church in Nandakhal, has been appointed as the new bishop of the Diocese of Vasai.
The announcement, made by Pope Francis, brings a leader with deep community connections. Born in Chulna village, Vasai, D'Souza began his priesthood journey in April 1998 after being ordained at St. Pius College in Goregaon.
In a statement outlining his vision, Rev. D'Souza emphasized his commitment to the welfare of the poor and marginalized, along with preserving the region's ecology. Vasai diocese, home to approximately 120,000 Catholics across 40 parishes, is noted for its cultural and ecological heritage, yet faces social and environmental challenges.
