Nine Asian elephants have been successfully relocated from Melbourne Zoo to the expansive Werribee Open Range Zoo, covering a 40-kilometer journey with the help of police escorts and synchronized traffic controls.
The elephants, demonstrating their approval of the new surroundings, engaged in enthusiastic trumpeting, trunk touching, and ear flapping, according to Erin Gardiner, the elephants' manager, noting their comfort and joy at reuniting.
The meticulous planning of the move, which included training the elephants and easing stress with sedatives, ensured the safety of the animals, explained veterinarian Bonnie McMeekin. Their new enclosure offers state-of-the-art facilities and space to thrive.
