At the National Crafts Museum and Hastkala Academy, a unique exhibition aims to spotlight the often-overlooked cultural significance of gamchhas, traditional scarves from the Indian subcontinent. Titled 'Gamchha: From the Ordinary to the Extraordinary,' the event will run from March 1 to March 10, showcasing the fabric's diversity, craftsmanship, and symbolism.
The exhibition, curated by Dastkari Haat Samiti, will also address the challenges traditional textiles face amid mass production and cheaper imports. Jaya Jaitly, president of the Samiti, underscored the importance of preserving this integral part of Indian handloom tradition.
Highlights include conceptual art installations, hands-on design interventions, and demonstrations of gamchha-inspired creations such as saris and fashion accessories. The exhibit seeks to elevate the gamchha beyond its utilitarian roots into a celebrated cultural artifact.
