India Moves to Ban Online Money Gaming: A New Bill for Digital Safety

The Indian government has introduced legislation to ban online gaming involving money. The bill seeks to curb addiction, financial fraud, and money laundering by outlawing online betting and gaming ads. It proposes strict penalties, a regulatory authority, and aligns with existing laws, emphasizing public health and societal welfare.

In a significant move to bolster digital safety and societal welfare, the Indian government has introduced a bill in the Lok Sabha aimed at prohibiting online gaming with monetary stakes. The legislation, dubbed the Promotion and Regulation of Online Gaming Bill, 2025, seeks to address growing concerns over addiction, financial fraud, and money laundering linked to such activities.

Introduced by Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw amidst opposition protests, the bill proposes a ban on all online betting and gambling activities, including fantasy sports and card games like poker and rummy. Comprehensive penalties have been outlined for violations, with jail terms extending up to three years and fines reaching Rs 1 crore, escalating for repeat offenders.

While the move addresses social and economic harms, industry representatives express concern over its impact on the booming gaming sector, which contributes significant tax revenue and promises substantial growth. The proposed legislation facilitates a regulatory framework for e-sports and social games, aligning digital gaming regulations with traditional gambling laws in India.
