Srijit Mukherji, an acclaimed filmmaker and National Award winner, is preparing to direct a feature film centered on Arthur Conan Doyle, famed creator of the iconic detective Sherlock Holmes, as reported by Variety. Titled 'Elementary, My Dear Holmes,' the project has gained support from the Conan Doyle Estate, who are serving as associate producers. The British-Indian co-production will be produced by Shahnaab Alam's London-based Invisible Thread Media along with Mukherji's Matchcut Productions, responsibly managing the Indian aspects of the film.
Set in 1906 London, the film will delve into Doyle's personal struggles, including fulfilling his dying wife's wish and his engagement in the case of George Edalji, an Indian-origin man wrongfully convicted. The narrative will also highlight the ordeal of Oscar Slater, pointing to Doyle's real-world application of his detective acumen, akin to his fictional character Holmes. This development was highlighted by Variety.
In his statement to Variety, Mukherji reminisced over his initial encounter with Sherlock Holmes and outlined the film's vision of Doyle navigating life, applying his own narrative clarity to the complicated realities he faced. This representation is structured under the UK-India Co-Production Treaty, facilitated by the British Film Institute and India's National Film Development Corporation. Mukherji is renowned for critically acclaimed films such as 'Jaatishwar' and 'Chotushkone,' with the latter earning him a National Award in 2015.
